About Us

Cooking by Heart is a series of short videos that document recipes as they are shared across generations. The series is about preserving food traditions, documenting family stories, and recording kitchen memories.

Paul and Alana are partners in food, drink and life. We met on the set of a Food Network show many years ago, and developed our love of cooking together. Inspired by those recipes that exist only in the mind of the maker and never quite translate to the written word, Cooking by Heart is about preserving special family recipes and archiving them for future generations. We cherish quiet family dinners and love hosting dinner parties.

  1. I don’t even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was good. I don’t know who you
are but certainly you’re going to a famous blogger if you are not already 😉 Cheers!

  2. It’s really a great and helpful piece of info. I’m happy
that you simply shared this useful info with us. Please keep
us informed like this. Thanks for sharing.

  3. What a delightful site, I really enjoyed reading the narrative and the pictures of the trip to France.
It is interesting to me, that Brigette is from France, and lived in the Midwest. I have a friend who was very close with a Brigette Kibler in High School In Peoria, Illinois. We have tried for many years to find this lady to invite her to our school reunions. This year will be our 55th reunion and we would love to have her return to us for a visit.

  4. Janice, this is the same woman! Brigitte Kibler married a John Helzer and became Brigitte Helzer. As you know, she is my mother in law. She lives in Vermont and is in fact currently traveling in her home country. What a small world!

  5. This is just marvelous news.! The friend is Phylis Scheafer Purple, I’m not sure but I believe they were in grade school and have been in touch for many years. somehow, that tie has been dropped for a while and Phylis sent your site to the man who is planning the reunion. I was on that committee for about 15 -20 years and find lost classmates is a exciting thing.
Please let Brigitte know the reunion is planned for Sept 12th and 13th in Peoria. It would be wonderful to see her again. She might not even remember me, but my grandparents were French, and I tried to talk to her a little about where they had lived.

Thank you so much for replying to me.

  6. Hi Paul,
My name is Liz Mazlish and my grandfather, Louis Mazlish, stayed with Abe and Dave when emigrating from Poland at age 15. Abe and Ruth attended my wedding in 1990, as Abe was my dad’s first cousin. I’d love an opportunity to speak with you, when you can.
    Thanks,
